With these national trends in mind, the CALS Pre-Veterinary Advising Model is built on four interconnected pillars. Together, they guide you from the start of pre-veterinary concentration through your veterinary school application process with clarity and purpose.

1. Application Preparation

We’ll guide you step-by-step through the application process so you can:

  • Understand national and school specific admissions trends.
  • Build a balanced application strategy, including applying to 3–5 schools aligned with your residency status and academic profile.
  • Develop strong personal statements, experience descriptions, and letters of recommendation.
  • View reapplication, when necessary, as a strategic step rather than a setback.

Our goal is to help you apply strategically—using data to inform decisions, not relying on aspiration alone.

2. Financial Literacy and Cost Awareness

To prepare you for the financial realities of veterinary education, we:

  • Introduce cost-of-attendance data early, including in-state, out-of-state, and private program comparisons.
  • Discuss how residency status, contract seats, and school choice influence total educational debt.
  • Use national cost-comparison tools from the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges to support informed decision-making.

We emphasize that financial planning is a critical part of professional readiness, not an afterthought.

3. Curriculum Requirements and Academic Planning

Because academic preparation is foundational, our advising focuses on:

  • Aligning your MSU degree plan with varying veterinary school prerequisites.
  • Evaluating GPA, course sequencing, and academic trends in context—not just minimum requirements.
